Paying Attention to Small Details with Ben Fuller
Let the little things reveal God’s presence
After generations of hurt in his family, contemporary Christian Music artist, Ben Fuller struggled with certain aspects of growing up and turned to cocaine and alcohol at a young age.
The journey of addiction and redemption is a difficult one, but with faith in Jesus, Ben found it possible to overcome even his darkest struggles. In his conversation with Family Life Radio, Ben shared four life practices that helped him to find solace in his life.
- Perseverance
Ben acknowledged that “addiction is a constant battle.” The road to redemption is not an easy one, and it often involves setbacks and challenges along the way, but, the important thing is to keep going, even when it feels like there’s no end in sight. Ben said, “Keep going because that’s what I tell myself. There’s got to be more – there’s something better.”
Ben’s perseverance is echoed in Scripture. Philippians 3:14, which states, “I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us” (Philippians 3:14 NLT).
2. Recognize progress.
The journey towards redemption is ongoing, and it’s important to recognize the progress that has been made. Ben found solace in seeing Jesus in small details and reminders of his progress.
Ben shared, “Just a reminder of how far I’ve come … It’s like, wow! Wait … I lived there and now I’m here.”
“Seeing Jesus and the small things … that’s where Jesus shows up for me.”
Recognition of your progress can help to reinforce your faith and provide hope for the future. The psalmist said, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4 NIV).
3. Wait
Waiting for redemption can be a difficult and trying time. Ben said, “I find myself so many times praying for patience because I can’t wait anymore.” But he also knows God’s timing is perfect and that everything happens according to His plan. “I’m in the right place at the right time, and this is exactly where I’m supposed to be,” Ben continued.
This is echoed in Ecclesiastes 3:11: “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end” (NIV).
“I pray for patience a lot to [help me] deal with the waiting,” Ben shared. Prayer is a powerful tool that can provide comfort and guidance during difficult times. (See Philippians 4:6-7.)
4. Look at the little details
Ben encourages, “Start paying attention to those minute details… that He is so amazing at working together.”
By recognizing these small details, we can begin to see God’s presence more clearly and feel his influence more strongly. Romans 8:28, says “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (NIV).
