Discover the Unexpected
New Ways to Experience God with Patrick Mayberry
You may find yourself today at a crossroads in your faith journey, seeking inspiration, connection and authenticity. If so, singer and songwriter, Patrick Mayberry offers you some inspiring thoughts he shares during his conversation with Family Life Radio.
“For me, variety is the spice of life. So I find creativity in a lot of different things in trying to sit down and be creative – I listen to music, mess with different sounds, sit at the piano – but I also just like going on a walk or getting outside,” Patrick says.
You can find God in the everyday moments of life. God spoke to Moses through a burning bush (Exodus 3:2) and to Elijah in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12).
Be open to experiencing God in unexpected ways.
Patrick emphasizes the importance of rest and refueling, saying, “Things that I found where I can just rest and refuel often will lead to new creativity and new ideas.”
God rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3). When you take time to rest in God’s presence and allow Him to renew your spirit, you are better equipped to do what He’s purposed for you.
Reach Out to the Marginalized
“I love to write songs for the person in the back row. The person who maybe feels like they don’t quite belong there,” Patrick says. “Maybe on their best day, they would like to be part, but they don’t necessarily feel like they can.”
Jesus reached out to the marginalized, the tax collectors and sinners (Matthew 9:10-13). You can extend God’s love to those who feel out of place, reflecting Christ’s compassion and acceptance.
Be Authentic in Your Faith
Patrick says he desires to write “real, normal human songs that feel very approachable.”
You can be honest with God about your doubts and fears, just as David was in the Psalms (Psalm 13:1-2).
Patrick says, “My hope and prayer is that digging into some of those emotions of doubt and fear, and questioning faith, and into our misinformed things about God, if I write about that stuff, I feel like that’s something just as humans we all resonate and wrestle with. So I pray that those songs really do connect.”
Authenticity leads to a deeper connection with God and others.
“I want to take my craft, and what God’s done in my life, and just work hard, and then lay it down, and then trust God to take it to the right people who need to hear it, when they need to hear it,” Patrick continues.
By surrendering your talents to God, you can trust Him with the outcomes of your life. Proverbs 3:5-6 says to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (ESV).
Answer the Call with Humility
Patrick’s humility shines through when he says, “I just try to show up and do what I feel called to do and ultimately let the Holy Spirit do the rest.”
Jesus said, “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12 ESV).
May Patrick’s words inspire you to deepen your relationship with God, serve others with love and live a life of faith that resonates with the heart of Christ.
