6 Questions for Dad on Father’s Day
Gain Biblical Strength and Assurance
Father’s Day is a time of reflection, celebration, and love. It’s a day to honor the remarkable role you play in the lives of your children and grandchildren. Yet, amidst the joy, it’s not uncommon for insecurities to whisper doubts in your ear. You might wonder if you’re doing enough, if you’re the role model your children deserve, or if the balance between discipline and grace you strive for is being achieved.
It is our hope that as we walk through these six together you will be encouraged and gain strength and assurance from your heavenly Father, remembering that in God’s eyes, you are enough.
1. Am I Doing Enough?
Perhaps you think about whether you’re providing sufficiently for your family—not just materially, but emotionally and spiritually. Remember, your effort, your presence, even in the simplest of moments, carries immense value.
Matthew 6:26 says, “Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?” (NLT). God sees your efforts and knows your heart.
Trust that your provision, in all its forms, is enough because He provides through you.
2. Am I a Good Role Model?
Questioning if you’re the example your children can look up to is natural. But consider this—being a good role model doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. It means showing them how to navigate both triumphs and mistakes with grace.
Proverbs 22:6 guides us: “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” (ESV). Your example of resilience, of admitting faults, of embracing learning opportunities, shapes their understanding of integrity and strength.
3. Am I Too Hard or Too Soft?
Striking the perfect balance in parenting is a common concern. Ephesians 6:4 offers wisdom: “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (NIV).
Your leadership and love, tempered with God’s guidance, create a strong foundation. It’s okay to grapple with this balance; it shows your deep care and desire to prepare your children for the future while guarding their hearts.
4. Do My Children Love and Respect Me?
It’s a question that weighs heavily on many fathers. But consider the ways you display love and respect in your daily interactions.
1 John 4:19 reminds us, “We love because He first loved us” (NIV). Your initial love, the steadfast care and protection you offer, is the first chapter in their lifelong understanding of love and respect.
Communication and expressions of affection, both big and small, fortify this bond.
5. Am I Losing My Identity?
Transitioning into fatherhood often brings about a shift in identity. But rather than viewing it as a loss, see it as an enrichment of who you are created to be.
Psalm 127:3-5 tells us, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him” (NIV). You can choose to embrace the complexities and joys of fatherhood as additions to your life’s tapestry, each thread woven with love and divine purpose.
6. Am I Making My Own Father Proud?
Making your father proud extends beyond achievements and accolades—it’s in the way you live, love, and lead your family. For those honoring the memory of a father, your dedication to building a loving home is a beautiful testament. You also have a heavenly Father you live to please.
As Hebrews 12:1 encourages, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (NIV).
Your journey as a father is a race run under the watchful eyes of those who came before you, cheered on by their legacy and love.
As we celebrate Father’s Day, remember, the insecurities you face are met with divine encouragement and understanding. You’re doing more than you realize, and your efforts are seen and cherished, both by your family and by God. This Father’s Day, reflect on the joys, the challenges, and the immense love that fatherhood entails. Know that you are appreciated, you are loved, and above all, you are enough.
Whether it’s through the unwavering support you provide, the lessons you teach, or the love you share, your role as a father or grandfather is invaluable. Embrace this day as a celebration of who you are and all you do. Happy Father’s Day.
