Finding Hope in the Darkness
Ben Fuller’s Message in Other Plans
Ben Fuller, a Christian music artist known for his heartfelt and vulnerable songwriting, emerged in the Christian music scene in 2019 and quickly gained attention for his powerful lyrics and genuine connection with his audience. We asked Ben if we’d never heard his music before, which of his songs he’d suggest we listen to first.
“The song that that touched me the most when I wrote it, and the song that I was most embarrassed for people to hear…is a song called ‘Other Plans,’ he revealed. Born from his brush with suicidal thoughts, this song holds a special place in his heart.
Ben explained how sharing such a personal story has led to powerful connections with listeners who have faced similar battles. “I’ve engaged in a lot of conversations about that topic, which is really messy, really hard, and really not fun to talk about,” Ben admitted.
So much more than a song for many of his listeners, “Other Plans” serves as a lifeline in seasons of darkness.
Honest Stories
Ben’s willingness to address difficult topics makes his music so impactful. Mental health, often stigmatized, finds a voice in Ben’s work, offering comfort and strength to those who feel isolated. His honesty about his experiences invites others to share as well, fostering a community of support and understanding.
His music reminds us that we are not alone in our pain and that we always have hope in Christ.
Looking Forward
“But the Cross,” a personal anthem for Ben, combats the lies of shame and fear. “Shame tells me I’m broken, but I know I’m forgiven. Fear tells me it’s over. But this is the beginning,” he shared enthusiastically. For those who struggle with feelings of shame and unworthiness, Ben’s music serves as a reminder of God’s forgiveness and love. His songs address the inner battles many Christian’s face, providing reassurance that they are not defined by their past but by God’s grace and redemption.
Creating from the Heart
Ben’s approach to songwriting is deeply rooted in his faith. His creative process begins with a prayer. “It was like, ‘Hey, God, what do You want to say? What can what can I do? How can I portray these words, this melody, in the way that you want it to be portrayed?’” he explained (03:27:37:25).
Ben’s music becomes an expression of his personal relationship with God, encouraging others to approach their own challenges and passions with a prayerful heart.
Connecting with the Audience
Ben continued, “There’s some stuff in here that’s inside of me. It’s like what are people going to say when they hear it? What are people going to think when they hear it? And I found those most vulnerable songs are the most connected.” The mutual exchange of deep, personal experiences creates a powerful bond. Ben’s openness encourages others to face and share their own challenges.
We need authentic relationships and communities where we can share our burdens without fear of judgment.
Inspiration through Struggle
Despite Ben’s fears, his decision to be transparent in his music has led to surprising connections and a ministry that extends far beyond what he could have imagined. His songs offer a lifeline to all of us, reminding us we’re not alone and that there is always hope.
