Feeling the Need to Be Perfect?
Colton Dixon on Identity
For many of us, the drive to be perfect or to please others can become overwhelming, often leading to a sense of never being enough. Colton Dixon, a celebrated Christian musician, knows this struggle all too well. He shared his insights with us on the challenges of striving for excellence while avoiding the traps of perfectionism and people-pleasing.
Colton pointed out that the root of these issues often lies in our identity. “When we identify ourselves with what we do, instead of who God says that we are, we fall into that temptation of it’s never enough,” he shared. This identity crisis can lead us to constantly seek validation through our achievements and the approval of others.
The Trap of Never Enough
Colton reached a turning point. “You can never win enough awards. You can never have enough followers on social media,” he noted. Always chasing the next accolade can leave us feeling empty and exhausted.
Instead, Colton encourages, “Find out who God says that you are. He actually chose us, and we’re sons and daughters, heirs to the throne.”
When we see ourselves as God’s children, loved and chosen, the pressure to constantly prove our worth diminishes.
Living from God’s View
“If we really held those things with open hands loosely, I think life would be easier,” Colton suggested. Embracing our identity in God can lead to a more fulfilling and less burdensome life.
Living from God’s view helps us to better use our gifts for His glory rather than our own validation.
