Follow the Path of Gratitude
Your words hold power – more power than you might realize. Your words can uplift, tear down, encourage, discourage, bring peace, or stir conflict. Your speech reveals the condition of your heart. How often do you speak regretful words that wound instead of heal or words that complain instead of praise?
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
– James 3:10 ESV
Guilty – but wait! Here’s a beautiful truth: gratitude can transform your speech. When you cultivate a heart of thanksgiving, it changes what you say and how you say it. The simple act of thanking God throughout your day shifts your perspective. It lifts your thoughts above the frustrations and irritations that often lead to harsh or careless words. When you express gratitude, it’s as though you’re inviting the Holy Spirit to guide your tongue, replacing grumbling with grace by refocusing your attention on the Lord.
When you thank God and practice gratitude, it also softens your heart toward others. You notice the good in them. And refocusing affects your relationships. Instead of criticizing, you find yourself encouraging. Instead of complaining, you start complimenting. Your transformation begins by thanking God for all He has given you.
Gratitude changes your words by first changing your heart.
As you thank God for His blessings, your heart aligns with His will. You begin to see people as He sees them – precious, loved, and worthy of kindness. This heart transformation leads to a change in your communication. It’s not about trying harder to say the right things; it’s about allowing God to renew your mind and fill your heart with His love.
Start every day with thankfulness for the things God has given you. Thank God for the water you drink, the air you breathe, the person in front of you, the opportunity to show grace, and the chance to speak life into a situation. As you do, you’ll find that your words naturally follow the path of gratitude, bringing blessing instead of cursing.
Today’s One Thing
Thank God for your blessings and challenges, and affirm, “God created me for good. I will let Him guide my mind and tongue. I will speak blessings and encouragement, knowing my tongue can bring life and peace to those around me.”
