Carving Out Time for God

It’s a new year and you’ve probably already faced moments where staying disciplined feels like an uphill battle. Maybe you started the year determined to spend time in God’s Word or be more intentional with your loved ones, but life’s distractions took you off course. Matthew West has some great insight for us when we asked him to share with us what things he has to be intentional about, otherwise they don’t happen.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

– Colossians 3:2 NIV

Matthew said, “The very first thing that popped into my head is reading my Bible. There’s a part of me that is embarrassed to say that because I think people expect you to have it figured out.” It’s comforting to know that even someone like Matthew, who leads others in worship and faith through his music, faces the same challenges you do.

Staying disciplined in your faith can be a struggle for all of us. But it’s a struggle worth fighting because it shapes the foundation of your relationship with God. Our verse today speaks directly to this challenge. Intentionality in your walk with God requires that you shift your focus, actively choosing to prioritize spiritual growth over the distractions that fill your day. It requires daily choices, even small ones, to keep your eyes fixed on Christ.

You’re probably juggling work, family, and other responsibilities, just like Matthew. It’s easy to feel guilty when you don’t always hit the mark. Take courage in Matthew’s transparency: “I don’t hit the mark every time. None of us do. But intentionality is necessary.”

Intentional living means carving out time for God, whether it’s five minutes to read your Bible in the morning or saying a prayer on your commute. It also means being present with the people you love—whether that’s spending time with your spouse, taking your kids on one-on-one dates, or simply having meaningful conversations.

Today’s One Thing

Pray: “Father, thank You for Your grace when I fall short. Help me to be more intentional in my time with You and in my relationships. Give me the strength to make small, daily choices that draw me closer to You and help me love others well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
