Choosing Worship Over Success
Scott Cash on staying true to God’s purpose
The desire for approval and recognition can sometimes overshadow our deeper need for spiritual fulfillment. Scott Cash, a member of We the Kingdom, candidly talked with us about the difficulty of navigating his desire for recognition while still maintaining a heart focused on worship.
Scott shared how accolades can easily become a source of distraction, pulling his focus away from God and toward the praise of others. “I can’t receive an accolade today because I want to know if I’m going to get the same one tomorrow,” Scott admitted. “My desire for human success is so great.”
This struggle isn’t unique to musicians. In your career, relationships, or personal achievements, it’s easy to fall into the trap of measuring your worth by the recognition you receive. But chasing external validation leads you further from the true source of your identity—God.
Your worth comes from being a child of God.
Staying Grounded in Worship
In the midst of this battle, Scott and the rest of We the Kingdom have found that worship keeps them grounded. Worship reminds them of their true purpose: to glorify God and serve Him with their talents. It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers—stream counts, chart positions, and awards—but when you refocus on worship, you remember that your value doesn’t come from accolades. Your worth comes from being a child of God.
Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (NIV). When you put God first and seek His approval over the approval of others, you’ll find the peace and fulfillment that accolades can’t provide.
Success might come and go, but your identity in Christ remains unshaken.
The Struggle Between Success and Faith
For Scott, moments like award shows are some of the toughest times to stay rooted in faith. Surrounded by peers and competition, the desire to be celebrated can often cloud the true purpose of worship.
“You want to beat them,” he reflected, speaking about his peers in the industry. “It’s a really destructive mindset.”
This confession reveals a universal truth: the battle for recognition is a battle of the heart. When you place your worth in worldly success, you risk losing sight of what truly matters. Worship reorients your heart, reminding you that God’s opinion is the only one that ultimately counts.
Choosing Worship Over Approval
The reality is, the praise of people will never be enough. It’s an empty pursuit that leaves you constantly striving for more. But worship offers a way out of this cycle. Through worship, you can redirect your heart and mind toward the One who knows you, loves you, and has already given you more than any accolade ever could.
When you feel the pull of approval or the pressure to succeed, pause and remember that God has already called you by name. He has chosen you. And in His presence, you are enough—not because of what you’ve accomplished, but because of who He is.
