3 Real Christian Health Journeys

Fueled by Faith and Community

How walking with others strengthens both body and soul

You weren’t meant to walk this road alone. That’s true in your faith—and just as true in your health journey.

Whether you’re trying to take the first step toward wellness or stay consistent with long-term goals, one thing can make all the difference: accountability. And when that accountability comes from Christ-centered community, it strengthens more than just your body—it shapes your heart.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

– Galatians 6:2 (NIV)

3 Real Christian Health Journeys

Recently, during a weekly ILM staff chapel, Amy, Laura, and Dean shared how community and accountability became crucial to their health and spiritual transformation. Their stories are raw, practical, and deeply rooted in faith—and they might be the encouragement you need today.

Accountability keeps you going when motivation fades.

For Laura, powerlifting started as a personal challenge—but it quickly became something more. “There were days I’d be standing in front of the barbell and almost crying. I’d go outside and say, ‘Lord, I need You right now because I feel weak.’ And He reminded me—I have the God of the universe on my side. That changes everything,” she shared.

But it wasn’t just God’s presence that strengthened her—it was the people who showed up too. “I used to be the girl who walked in with headphones and didn’t talk to anyone,” Laura said, “But God said, ‘Maybe you should start sharing.’ So I did. And now, I’ve got women in the gym watching my lifts and cheering me on. I didn’t expect that—but it reminded me that I’m not meant to do this alone.”

When the process feels long or the results feel slow, it’s powerful to have your people—the ones who see your effort and speak life into it—help to keep you going.

Encouragement Sparks Growth

Amy has been running marathons for years. She’s completed 51 so far. But even for someone so experienced, accountability remains essential. “I always say—start where you are. I started by walking a block and running a block. But over time, I built endurance.”

Amy also encouraged, “Having a dietitian to check in with made a huge difference. Last year, I didn’t have that same accountability, and I could tell. This year, with that support back in place, I’ve been more consistent and had more energy.”

She also knows that accountability doesn’t just push you forward—it brings peace in uncertainty. “When I had a heart scan done, I felt like God told me, ‘Do the last thing I told you to do.’ So I ran a marathon while I waited for results. He gave me such peace in that, and everything turned out okay.”

Shared Stewardship Shapes Legacy

Dean’s health journey began when his father passed away—a turning point that shifted his view of wellness from individual effort to intentional legacy. “After that, my wife and I said, ‘We’ve got to start making better choices.’ It wasn’t a crash diet or an overnight change. It was small steps—one meal at a time, one workout at a time.” Dean continued, “We encouraged each other!”

What started between husband and wife extended into their family. Dean smiled, “My youngest daughter started riding her bike more because of the changes she saw in us. Now, we go on rides together. It’s become something we do. I didn’t expect that my decisions would impact my family like that—but it has.”

His encouragement to others: “Start with something realistic. Walk a block. Add a vegetable. Don’t try to do it all at once. Just start—and let someone walk with you.”

Make It a Journey Together

Accountability invites others to walk with you so you don’t give up when it gets hard. It’s being surrounded by voices that say, “You can do this—because God is with you, and we are too.”

Invite others along for the journey.

Hebrews says, “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds… encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (NIV).

Whether you’re building strength, building endurance, or building better habits, bring someone along. Encourage them—and let them encourage you. Because your journey is stronger with others by your side.

Take a moment right now and consider:

  • Who could you invite to walk with you in your faith and health journey?
  • What small goal could you commit to this week—and share with someone?
  • Who needs your encouragement right now?

These stories were shared during one of our weekly ILM staff chapels—a time we set aside to encourage one another and grow together in our walk with Christ. Along with a weekly time of prayer, these gatherings are part of how we live intentionally in Christ, linking arms as a team to support each other on the journey. Because we believe a thriving faith community begins with walking it out together.
