Small Beginnings Matter
The most God-honoring things you do will never trend, go viral, or even be noticed by those around you. But God sees. Whether you’re opening your Bible before sunrise, showing up on time for work, helping your neighbor, or praying quietly in faith, you’re laying bricks in something eternal. Every small step builds something blessed when you trust and walk with God.
Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.
–Zechariah 4:10 NLT
Zechariah, a prophet, spoke during a time when the people of God were rebuilding the second temple. Zerubbabel, the leader overseeing the rebuild, had laid the foundation, but the progress felt slow and unimpressive. Still, God declared that no one should despise those small beginnings. His eyes were on the work, right down to the plumb line in the hand of the builder. That’s the kind of Father you follow. He sees your quiet obedience and calls it beautiful.
Delayed gratification, or investing in the intangible and unforeseen, requires faith, especially in today’s culture of instant gratification. Perhaps your efforts seem insignificant in comparison to someone else’s success. But Jesus taught that faithfulness in small things reveal your readiness for greater things. Even if what’s in your hands now feels underwhelming, He knows you’ll be faithful when He gives you more.
God builds greatness through the faithfulness of small beginnings.
As you may have noticed, God rarely reveals the whole plan all at once. When you follow Him step by step, you grow your dependence, not your ego. Small beginnings aren’t setbacks—they’re setups! They build strength, stretch your patience, teach your heart to trust, and build a foundation that can carry the weight of His blessing when it comes.
Look around at what God’s already placed in your life. Embrace the relationships, routines, and responsibilities He’s entrusted to you. Show up with care. Speak words that heal. Create, serve, and lead with joy—even when no one claps. God sees. And He’s the One who brings the increase in His perfect time.
Today’s One Thing
Thank God for the small things, and declare, “I will be faithful, because God values my obedience and uses every beginning—no matter how small—to fulfill His purpose in my life.”
