The Detonation of Joy
We often think joy is reserved for mountaintop moments, but what if it was meant to bloom in the everyday hillsides of life—the ordinary, the overlooked, the desolate places? That’s where Jesus chose to speak about joy. And it’s in that unexpected choice that we find one of the most powerful truths about the kind of joy He offers us.
You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. —Psalm 16:11 NKJV
Let Tauren’s words reframe your understanding of joy. Sourced from God’s character, joy is the steady current of God’s nature moving through us. Even in desolate seasons, we are wired for joy—deep, steady, unshakable. His kindness, His patience, His peace—they are all part of the “flow” that joy draws from.
Action Step:
Write down one area of your life that feels desolate right now. Then beside it, write a truth about God’s character (e.g., His faithfulness, His mercy, His presence). Ask God to help you see how His joy can flow into that very space.
Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for being the source of unshakable joy. I confess that I’ve often searched for joy in fleeting places. Today, I choose to anchor myself in Your presence. Detonate joy within me—not the kind that denies pain, but the kind that radiates Your character even through it. Let joy rise from within and change the way I walk through every part of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
“Joy is the overwhelming flow of God’s character present in every aspect of our lives.”
—Tauren Wells
When we see joy as an extension of who God is, rather than something we must generate, the pressure lifts. We stop asking, “How can I feel joyful in this mess?” and instead begin to pray, “God, let me see You here.”
Tauren said, “Before joy impacts everybody else around us, it has to detonate within us.” Joy begins as an inward explosion—a spiritual reality planted deep within, not contingent on mood, money, or milestones.
Jesus preached the Beatitudes not from a grand mountaintop, but from a simple hill named Aramis—a word meaning “desolate” and “isolated.” And yet, He called it a place of strength. Why? Because joy isn’t something we find by climbing higher; it’s something we discover when God’s presence meets us right where we are.
Today’s One Thing
Pray: Father, thank You for being the source of unshakable joy. Today, I choose to anchor myself in Your presence. Detonate joy within me—the kind that radiates Your character even through it. Let joy rise from within and change the way I walk through every part of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
