Finding God in Your Work

Labor Day gives us a break—a little space to breathe. But it also gives us a chance to think about why we work and who we’re working for. Whether you’re clocking in, caring for family, managing a home, or running between appointments, your work matters. Every bit of it.

And also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.
— Ecclesiastes 3:13 (NKJV)

Let’s be real—some days, our work feels like a holy calling. Other days? It just feels like a whole lot of dishes, deadlines, and to-dos. But God sees all of it. And when we offer it to Him, it becomes meaningful, even sacred.

Ecclesiastes 3:13 shifts our perspective and helps us see work as a gift to be enjoyed. That doesn’t mean every task will feel exciting or fulfilling. But it reminds us that joy can be found in our labor, not just in escaping from it.

Even the ordinary parts of your day become sacred when you offer them to God.

This verse also invites us to pause and enjoy what our hands have built—whether it’s a peaceful home, a strong relationship, a career milestone, or simply a dinner shared with loved ones. God isn’t asking us to hustle endlessly; He invites us to both work well and rest well. That balance brings Him glory.

Jesus modeled this, too. He worked with His hands, showed up daily, and He also took time to break bread, retreat, and celebrate. If the Son of God saw value in both labor and enjoyment, we can too.

So today, don’t just rest—rejoice. Look at what God has enabled you to do and thank Him for it. Your work isn’t meaningless, and your rest isn’t indulgent. Both are gifts. Receive them.

Today’s One Thing
Sometime today, take a moment to enjoy something you’ve worked hard for—a meal, a clean home, a conversation, even a quiet moment. Thank God for that specific gift and let it remind you that your labor has purpose and beauty.
