Seeing Beneath the Surface

Jesus saw what others couldn’t. The Spirit gave Him discernment, and He invites you to grow in that same wisdom.

“My son, let them not depart from your eyes—keep sound wisdom and discretion.”
—Proverbs 3:21 NKJV

In Mark 2, a group of friends carried a paralyzed man to Jesus. The crowd was too thick to get through, so they climbed the roof, tore it open, and lowered their friend down into the room where Jesus was speaking. Jesus saw their faith and told the man his sins were forgiven.

Nearby, the religious leaders silently questioned Him. They never said a word. Still—Jesus knew what they were thinking.

Scripture says Jesus perceived in His spirit what was in their hearts. (See Mark 2:8) It’s a quiet moment, but powerful. He listened deeply. He discerned. And He responded with truth and grace.

When you listen to the Spirit, you begin to notice what to say, even when no words are spoken.

This is wisdom alive. And it’s available to you, too. Proverbs 3:21 encourages us to hold on to “sound wisdom and discretion.” The Holy Spirit gently teaches you how to see beneath the surface. You learn to pause, to pray, and to notice what someone might be carrying. Why? So you can love them with deeper compassion.

Jesus used discernment to open a space for healing. He invites you to walk in that same kind of wisdom today. You don’t need all the answers. You just need to stay close to the Spirit to hear His direction and respond accordingly.

If you ask, the Holy Spirit will give you insight today—not just into what people say, but what they may be carrying. Allow that insight to move you to prayer, compassion, and gentle care.

Today’s One Thing
Pray: Jesus, thank You for seeing what others miss. Holy Spirit, help me grow in that kind of wisdom. Let me notice with grace, listen with love, and respond with the kind of care that reflects You. Amen.
