Leaving the Nets Behind

Have you ever gone fishing? Picture using nets, not poles, and the splash of water against the boat, the weight of wet ropes in your hands, and the “how-to” experience you know by heart. Then imagine Jesus stepping into that ordinary moment and inviting you into something greater.

And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately, they left their nets and followed him.
– Matthew 4:19–20 ESV

The Sea of Galilee was more than scenery for Peter and Andrew; it was security. Their nets represented income, identity, and a future they understood. Fishing was their livelihood. When Jesus called them, He did not offer a five-year plan, a monetary bonus, or a safety net. He offered Himself.

Adapt that historical context to your life. Your nets may not be made of rope and twine, but rather comfort, reputation, financial control, habits, or even familiar routines. You know how to juke and jive and get things accomplished. For this illustration, nets can be anything that grips you tightly because they make you feel secure.

God knows the bigger story of your life. Jesus steps into your ordinary moments and invites you to trust Him with what you know and broaden your horizon with Him. The Holy Spirit gently nudges your heart, giving you courage to step forward. When you release what you cling to, you create space for God’s purpose to unfold in ways greater than you can imagine.

God has a bigger plan for you when you exchange your security for His calling.

Accepting Christ’s calling reshapes your priorities. You discover that true security rests in the character of God, not in what you hold or control. The Spirit strengthens you as you step into new waters, reminding you that the One who calls you is with you and is offering you more fulfillment.

Jesus still calls ordinary people into extraordinary purpose. Lay down the nets that hold you back and follow Him with confidence.

Today’s One Thing
Pray, asking the Lord to help you see the nets you need to release, and to help your unbelief. Affirm today, “I wholeheartedly trust the Lord to lead and guide me into new territory.”
