How to Trust God Through Change
The Freedom of Confession and Surrender
Change stirs things up inside you.
- A new season at work.
- A shift in your family.
- A decision you didn’t expect to face.
- Sometimes an opportunity opens that you prayed for.
- Other times a situation unfolds that you never would have chosen.
Either way, change reaches into your thoughts and emotions.
You may notice your mind racing ahead, trying to solve problems that haven’t even happened yet. You may feel the pressure to manage outcomes or keep everything steady for the people around you. The more responsibility you carry in your thoughts, the heavier your heart can feel.
But God meets you right there.
In seasons like this, He invites you into two simple practices that steady your heart: confession and surrender. Each of these give you a way to bring what’s real into God’s presence and release what you were never meant to carry alone.
When you practice confession and surrender, you find it easier to stop trying to manage change by yourself. Instead, you can walk through the season with God’s guidance, peace, and steady care.
Bringing What’s Real Into God’s Presence
Confession starts with honesty. You simply tell God the truth about what’s happening in your heart. You don’t need polished prayers or carefully chosen words. Come to Him as you are and speak openly about what you’re carrying.

The psalmist prayed this way:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
try me and know my thoughts.
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.”
— Psalm 139:23–24 ESV
Conversation like that invites God into the middle of your thoughts and emotions. In everyday life, confession might sound like this:
- “Lord, I feel anxious about what’s ahead.”
- “God, I keep trying to control how this situation turns out.”
- “Father, I’m not sure what my next step should be.”
God already sees your heart. When you speak honestly with Him, you open space for His help right where you need it.
When You Name It, the Pressure Begins to Lift
During seasons of change, many emotions stay buried under busy schedules and the effort to keep moving forward. Worries circle through your mind. Questions pile up. Pressure grows quietly because everything happens inside your thoughts.
But your words of confession interrupt that cycle.
When you bring those concerns to God and speak them honestly in prayer, you stop carrying them alone. What once swirled in your mind turns into a real conversation with the One who understands your heart completely.
King David experienced this kind of release when he wrote:
“I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I have not hidden.
I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’
And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.”
— Psalm 32:5 NKJV

When you stop holding everything inside and bring it to God, the weight begins to lift. Your thoughts slow down. Your heart settles. You respond with trust instead of reacting out of pressure.
That moment of honesty prepares your heart for the next step.
Releasing What You Were Never Meant to Carry
- Confession names what’s happening inside you.
- Surrender releases it into God’s hands.
During seasons of change, surrender often means letting go of outcomes you cannot control. You release timelines, expectations, and the pressure to solve everything immediately.
Scripture points you toward that kind of trust:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”
— Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV
Surrender may sound like a quiet prayer in the middle of your day:
“Lord, I surrender this season to You.”
“I release the outcome I’ve been trying to manage.”
“I trust You to guide my next step.”
Questions may still remain. Yet when you release what sits outside your control, you allow God’s peace to steady your heart.

A Simple Practice for Everyday Moments
When change feels overwhelming, a short prayer rhythm helps you stay grounded with God throughout the day.
Start with confession. Tell God honestly what you’re feeling or thinking.
- “God, here’s what I’m carrying today.”
- “Here’s what I’m worried about.”
- “Here’s where I feel uncertain.”
Next, move to surrender. Release those concerns into His care.
- “I surrender this situation to You.”
- “I trust You with the outcome.”
- “I place this season in Your hands.”
Then pause and receive what God promises to give. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7 ESV).
Peace doesn’t come by solving every problem. You experience peace as you trust the One who walks with you through every season.
Staying Close to God Through Change
Change will always bring questions. When you practice confession and surrender, you stay close to God; He sees the whole picture.
You don’t have to carry every outcome. You don’t have to solve every detail of the future. God welcomes your honesty, receives your surrender, and gives you wisdom for the next step. That’s where peace begins to grow—right in the middle of real life.
Because even in seasons of change, God faithfully leads you forward.
