Stand Fast in True Freedom
The freedom that outlasts every election, every headline, and every hard season was won on a cross. And it belongs to you today.
Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Galatians 5:1 NKJV
This year, we celebrate 250 years of independence as one nation under God. It’s a day to celebrate with flags flying, fireworks overhead, gratitude for the country you call home, and the freedoms it affords. That celebration is good and right, but Paul points to a freedom that runs deeper than any nation can grant and wider than any government can reach.
“Stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.” Paul describes liberty that was purchased at the highest possible price, secured once and for all, and handed directly to you. No election can revoke it. No cultural shift can diminish it. No headline can threaten it.
That is the freedom worth celebrating.
The freedom Christ purchased for you is permanent, personal, and no power on earth can take it away.
Paul wrote much of his teaching about freedom from inside a prison cell. In Acts 16, he and Silas sat in the innermost cell, their feet in stocks, and their backs freshly beaten. But, at midnight they weren’t complaining; they were singing hymns. Their voices rose before anything changed because the freedom they knew in Christ was greater than the chains that held them in bondage.
That is what standing fast looks like. The chains were real. The prison was real. And the liberty by which Christ had made them free was more real than either one. When the earthquake came and the doors flew open, Paul didn’t run. A man who knows he is free doesn’t need to.
Galatians 5:1 carries a warning alongside the celebration: do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. The enemy knows he cannot revoke your freedom, so he works to make you forget you have it. Fear, anxiety, shame, and comparison are the chains that have no legal hold on a person Christ has set free. Stand fast. They cannot bind what Christ has already freed.
This July Fourth, celebrate the country you love, and rejoice in the deeper freedom that belongs to you in Christ. You are not bound by fear, by shame, by what this world says about you or does around you. Christ made you free. Stand in it with everything you have. Sing at midnight if you have to.
Today’s One Thing
Identify one area where fear or shame has been acting like a chain in your life. Write it down, then write this over it: Christ has made me free.
