The Grass Is Greenest Where You Water It

Colton Dixon on staying focused

You know what you’re supposed to be doing with your life. So why does everyone else look like they’re further along than you? Singer-songwriter Colton Dixon shares what he learned, and it will change how you see the season you’re in.

“This goes into one of my favorite Bible verses of all time, Jeremiah 29:11. It talks about the plans that God has for us. I believe that they’re the best plans. Those plans aren’t to harm us, but they’re to prosper us, to give us hope, to give us a future.”

Colton continues, “I believe he’s got those plans for me. I believe he has them for you, too.”

That belief has carried him through seasons that tested it. “There have been many times in my life where, walking through a season, I’ve felt run down by whatever it is I’m going through—and I’m reminded where I’m at currently might not be God’s best for me, but I know that He has that plan. So, God, whatever you have for me, I want to step into that lane. Even if I’ve taken myself off course for a second—He’s good. He’ll redeem the time.”

Don’t Miss Right Now

It started early for Colton. “I believe that I was led to music at 13 years old, was really young. I encountered Holy Spirit for the first time at a piano recital. First time I sang in public, but I just knew that God was going to use music in my life to some capacity.”

Knowing the calling didn’t make the wait easy. “Like humans do, I was trying to make it all happen in my own strength, with my own two hands, not really trusting in the plan of God, but knowing that I had a word from God. So often I think we confuse a word from God as the timing of God.”

And while he waited, comparison crept in. “I was comparing myself to where other people were, looking on the other side of the fence, thinking the grass was greener over there. And what I’ve learned is that the grass is greenest where you water it. So whatever God has for you right now, in the moment, it may not be where you want to wind up. You can have goals. You can have a month long goal. You can have five year, ten year goals, whatever. But don’t miss out on what God has for you right now. Because those things—He’s building you up to prepare you for what’s to come.”

Your Goliath Is Coming

“He didn’t start David with the battle with Goliath. He started him with tending the sheep and fighting the lion—and I think there might have even been a bear in there. There were other battles before David met Goliath. So maybe you’re just not at the Goliath fight yet.”

The invitation isn’t to stop dreaming. It’s to stop sleepwalking through right now. Colton encourages, “Keep your head down. Keep focused on what God has for you. And when the time comes, you’ll be ready.”
