Distinguishing Between Purpose and Calling
The words purpose and calling are often used interchangeably in everyday language, but for a Christ follower, they have distinct meanings. Purpose answers why you exist. Calling answers what has God prepared you to pursue.
We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.
– Proverbs 16:9 NLT
Calling is something you discover as you walk with the Lord while He prepares you. This truth brings a deep sense of peace because your future does not depend on having all the answers or having all the understanding today. Your calling is personal, specific, connected to gifts, and involves acknowledging God as the Giver, being a good steward of what has been given, and following His will and purpose.
A few examples include Joseph, Moses, David, Esther, and Paul:
Joseph learned leadership, perseverance, and dependence on God through betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment before he ever stood before Pharaoh.
Moses spent forty years in the wilderness tending sheep before leading Israel out of Egypt.
David developed courage and trust while shepherding sheep before becoming king.
Esther was positioned in the palace before the crisis arose that required her influence.
Paul the Apostle spent years growing and preparing after his conversion before his missionary ministry expanded.
The pattern is remarkably consistent. God often does His deepest work before He does His most visible work through a person.
God’s consistency is encouraging because the seemingly ordinary season you are living today is actually part of God’s preparation as you acknowledge Him as Lord. The lessons you’re learning, the relationships you’re building, and the challenges you’re navigating are shaping you.
God prepares you for the calling on your life.
Consider your own story, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Some moments may have felt routine and challenging at the time, but later became pivotal experiences in God’s larger plan. You praised and prayed through these times, and as the distance from those moments grew, you began to see distinct ways the Father demonstrated His wisdom as He developed you for your unique calling.
The beautiful reality of God’s calling is that He never starts with your qualifications; He starts with His purpose, which is for all believers—knowing Him through Christ, growing in holiness, loving Him and others, serving faithfully, and bringing Him glory. Long before you recognized His voice, He was arranging circumstances, shaping your character, teaching lessons, and placing people in your path. Every season mattered as He prepared you.
Today’s One Thing
As you reflect on purpose and calling, willingly identify, “I am known by God, guided by God, and prepared by God for the work He has called me to do.”
