Too Late?
The Question God Answers Differently Than You Expect
Is it too late? A quiet thought sneaks up on you in the ordinary moments—folding laundry, driving home, lying in bed trying to quiet your thoughts and fall to sleep. Maybe the window for doing something that really matters has already closed, and you missed it.
Let’s start with what’s solid under your feet. You exist to bring God glory—growing to know Him, reflecting Him, bearing fruit as His. That’s settled, and no birthday can touch it. You are as treasured by God today as you have ever been, and just as fully part of His family. You are just as fully part of His family.
So the struggle isn’t really about purpose. It’s about calling—the specific way that purpose takes shape through you—and the fear that its season has passed. Cheers to you because it hasn’t.
God’s Word says your most fruitful years are still be ahead. “They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green” (Psalm 92:14 NIV). Read that again—still. This is a promise about the second half of life, written for the very season you may be grieving. God keeps it evergreen.
Your calling has no expiration date because the God who gave it to you will faithfully complete it.
And He has a long history of starting His best work late.

Consider Moses. Forty years in Pharaoh’s palace, then forty more tending sheep in the desert—a man well past the age scripture itself calls a full life, his big moment seemingly behind him. Then God spoke from a burning bush: “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10 NIV). Moses was eighty. Those quiet decades in the wilderness were the training for everything that came next. God’s timing looked impossibly late, and it was exactly right.
Or think of Abraham. At seventy-five— long past the age most people expect a whole new chapter —God said, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation” (Genesis 12:1–2 NIV). The whole story of God’s covenant people started in the second half of one man’s life. Abraham had a voice and a promise, and he took the first step before he could see the whole path. That’s what faith often looks like: moving forward on what God said, one step at a time.
Then there’s Anna. By the time we meet her in the temple, she’s eighty-four, widowed for decades. “She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying” (Luke 2:37 NIV). Anna had been faithfully showing up—worshiping, praying, waiting—for years and years. And in that long, quiet faithfulness, God positioned her for one of the most significant moments in history. She saw the infant Jesus, recognized her Redeemer, and began telling everyone who was waiting for Him. Her decades of devotion were holy preparation. God was saving them for exactly that moment.

Your faithfulness is still bearing fruit. God sees every bit of the ordinary, unseen ways you’ve been serving, praying, loving, and showing up—, and He’s still using it. The years you thought were quietly slipping past have been preparing you all along.
So hold on to this. So hold on to this. You asked if it was too late—and God’s answer is better than you hoped. He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6 NIV). The work is His to complete, and the timeline rests in faithful hands. You are God’s beloved, with a calling still in motion.
All you have to do is take the next step in front of you. Have the conversation, commit to the yes, and move forward in small obedience you’ve been putting off because it felt too late. It’s right on time. Take it, and trust the one who’s still writing your story to finish it well.
