The Cord in the Window

Rahab had a reputation and a past that should have disqualified her. Instead, God wrote her into the story of His people—and later, into the line of Christ.

The same is true of the prostitute Rahab who welcomed the spies and sent them away on another road. She received God’s approval because of what she did.
— James 2:25 GW

Rahab runs a business built on a reputation nobody would call respectable. When two Israelite spies show up in Jericho, she hides them, lies to protect them, and asks for one thing in return: that the spies spare her family when the city falls (Joshua 2:12–13).

The spies agree, and give her a sign—a scarlet cord tied in her window (Joshua 2:18). When Jericho’s walls come down, that cord marks the one house left standing (Joshua 6:22-23). Rahab is spared, and grafted into Israel, marries into the line of Judah, and becomes an ancestor of King David—and of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).

God writes your complicated past into His story of redemption.

A past you’d rather not explain. A reputation you’re still working to shake. A season you hope nobody brings up. Rahab carried all three, and still became a part of God’s story.

One cord in one window changed the trajectory of Rahab’s entire family line. Her faithful action, more than a spotless record, earned her God’s favor (James 2:25).

What you do with your faith today matters more than what your past tries to say about you.

Whatever marks your past, God already includes you in the story just as you are. He’s already holding out the cord.

Today’s One Thing
Name one part of your story you’ve assumed disqualifies you, and bring it honestly to God today.
