Thanking God Before the Answer
What if your gratitude could begin before you see the outcome? Gratitude rests on something more dependable than circumstances. You can thank God before and during your prayers. While you pray and seek His perfect will, you can trust that He hears you.
So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me.
– John 11:41 NLT
Standing outside Lazarus’s tomb, Jesus faced a situation filled with grief. Lazarus had been dead four days. Martha and Mary were mourning, and a crowd of people stood nearby, fully aware of what had happened.
Before calling Lazarus out, Jesus thanked the Father for hearing Him. His gratitude came before the miracle became visible. Jesus knew the Father, trusted His purposes, and expressed gratitude before anyone else could see what the Father was about to do.
Your prayers may place you in a similar space between asking and seeing. You may be waiting for direction about a decision, restoration in a relationship, or an answer you cannot produce yourself.
Gratitude keeps your attention on the Father as you wait for His answer.
Giving thanks does not require you to predict what God will do. It invites you to trust who He is and what He will do. You can thank the Father for hearing your prayers, for His wisdom and direction, and for His faithful presence as He hears your requests. As you pray, you can bring Him your uncertainty and still rest in His care. You can ask for what you desire while surrendering the outcome to His wisdom.
Jesus makes this confidence possible because through Him you belong to the Father and can approach Him freely. The Holy Spirit cultivates joy within you as you trust God while you wait. Your gratitude can be expressed today because your confidence rests in God rather than in how you imagine Him answering your prayers. God loves you, Jesus has secured your future, and the Holy Spirit remains in you.
Today’s One Thing
Thank God before and during your prayers, and affirm, “I give thanks while I wait because my Father hears me, loves me, and remains faithful.”
