Focused on Eternity

And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.

Psalm 39:7

Brandy arrived at Nana’s house a little early. She knew picking up her eighty-nine-year-old great grandmother would take a little bit more time. Nana moved slowly these days, and she needed to be sure she brought her meds and extra oxygen tank with her to spend the day at Brandy’s parent’s house for the big family Christmas celebration.

She was thankful to have the 20-minute drive with her Nana. They didn’t get to see each other too often since Brandy had moved to the city and started her career. Nana had always been direct, and Brandy could tell she had something on her mind. “Nana, what is it?”

“Well,” Nana began, “now that you are a busy city lady, I wanted to be sure you don’t lose sight of what’s important.”

Brandy nodded, encouraging her great-grandmother to continue.

“I’ve found the most important thing is to keep eternity in focus. Jesus did life while on this earth, but his thoughts always were on eternity. Life is short, no matter how long we live, and we must never disregard that which is most important.”

Brandy smiled to herself. “Yes, Nana,” she said, “I remember. I must not put off important things. I should always tell others how much I love them. I must invite God to work in my heart and in the areas of life I need to improve. And above all else, never neglect to tell someone about Jesus. Right?”

Nana smiled approvingly. “I’ve watched so many people build this life with little thought to where they’ll spend eternity. I am thankful you understand that your one true hope is in the Lord.”
