Put Your Giant Problem into God’s Perspective

And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

─ 1 Samuel 17:26

Jenny brought the hot soup and cold sandwiches out to the front porch and set them next to the tea glasses. Her friend, Caroline, sat contemplatively in the porch swing. “Have you ever thought about why David called Goliath an ‘uncircumcised’ Philistine and why it was important for us to note that?” Caroline asked.

“I actually have,” Jenny replied. “The times I’ve heard ministers use that scripture in their messages, I found myself wondering why they usually skip past that without explaining.”

“I’ve been researching it,” Caroline admitted. “I’ve found uncircumcised was used when referring to someone without a covenant or someone who doesn’t know God. And David understood what it meant to belong to God.”

“So, unlike his brothers, and other Israelites, who feared Goliath, David saw a man who defied His God. The Israelites saw a giant; David saw the situation from God’s perspective.” Jenny said. “Wow! Those are two totally different things. What a difference perspective can make.”

Caroline smiled. “I want to have an image of God like that inside of me. I want a picture so strong that no matter what circumstances the enemy throws at me, I can stand strong knowing I belong to God.”
