Don’t Get Sidetracked

Let your eyes look right on [with fixed purpose], and let your gaze be straight before you. Consider well the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established and ordered aright.

─ Proverbs 4:25-26 AMPC

We usually find time to do what we enjoy because our heart usually commands how we live. It’s important not to get sidetracked.

In the early days of railroading, few lines had more than a single track which presented a huge problem when one train met another going the other way. The railroads built sidings – short lengths of track running parallel to the mainline –so that one train could be switched to the sidetrack, while the other passed by.

The many distractions in our culture today can sidetrack our faith. We need to make sure our affections push us in the right direction to keep our focus on Christ. Solomon tells us to guard our heart above all else (Proverbs 4:23). He encouraged us to focus on the desires that we know will keep us on the right path (Proverbs 4:25-26).

Today’s One Thing

Here are five things you can do to avoid getting sidetracked in your pursuit of pleasing Christ.

  1. Make a list of things you do throughout the day, distractions, interruptions, things that steal your focus.
  2. Review them and circle those that you should eliminate.
  3. Place your list in a place where you’ll see it throughout the day.
  4. Become intentional this week to eliminate them as much as possible.
  5. At the end of the week, review how much more focused you were on things that mattered most.
