Down in My Heart

Joseph O’Brien’s Encouragement to Find Joy Every Day

Joseph O’Brien is known for his energetic and joyful music that resonates deeply with listeners. His ability to blend nostalgic elements with contemporary sounds has made his songs relatable and inspirational. In a recent interview with Family Life Radio, Joseph shares the story behind his release, “Down in My Heart,” a modern rendition of a classic Vacation Bible School (VBS) song.

Rediscovering Joy through Music

When asked which song he would recommend to someone unfamiliar with his music, Joseph enthusiastically responds, “Honestly, the one that I released just recently, is called ‘Down in My Heart.'” A modernized version of the well-loved VBS song “I’ve Got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy,” holds a special place in Joseph’s heart.

Joseph wanted to bring a new perspective to the simple truth embedded in the song. “I take one of those childhood truths that you have, but then have a new perspective when you get older,” he shares. (03:42:17:07). He’s been able to connect with listeners on multiple levels, evoking memories of innocent faith while encouraging growth and deeper understanding in their current walk with Jesus with this song.

Joy is always within reach, waiting to be chosen and celebrated.

Creating Nostalgia and Inspiration

Joseph’s intention with “Down in My Heart” is to create a piece that bridges the gap between nostalgia and contemporary relevance. He elaborates, “I want people to experience the everlasting joy of Jesus.”

This joy is not fleeting or superficial as the joy described by those yet to know Jesus, but deeply rooted in a relationship with Christ, something that can be felt anew with the fresh, upbeat arrangement of the song.

“I want people to feel something that reminds them of when they were young, but also challenges them to become something better in the future.” This dual aim reflects Joseph’s understanding of music as a powerful tool for both reflection and motivation, a way to honor the past while looking forward to the future.

The Songwriting Journey

The creation of “Down in My Heart” was as joyful and spontaneous as the song itself. Initially reluctant, Joseph admits, “I walked into a songwriting session late because I had double booked myself.” At that moment, he was not in the mood to write an upbeat song. “I really don’t want to do that. I just want to write a ballad and sit in my sadness.”

The mood quickly shifted when he heard the sound his co-writers, Kobe and Christian, had already started working on. “I heard the beat, and I was like, ‘I got joy.’ It just came; probably was the Lord.” Joseph found himself inspired by the joyful tune, and the lyrics began to flow naturally.

The collaborative nature of this session contributed significantly to the song’s success. Joseph says, “That’s really the beauty I think of this song is you like, choose joy. It’s not something that you just consistently feel.”

Choosing joy, despite circumstances, resonates deeply with listeners who may be struggling to find happiness in their own lives.

The writing process was enjoyable and felt divinely guided, with ideas coming effortlessly. Joseph reflects, “That was the first time I think I’d ever had a co-write where I was just happy. After I left, I was like, that was just enjoyable, and really felt like the Lord was giving us ideas, and there was no pressure.”  The experience restored Joseph’s belief in the power of joyful collaboration and divine inspiration.

Living with the Song

After its creation, “Down in My Heart” sat for about a year before its release. During this time, Joseph lived with the song, allowing it to mature and resonate more deeply with him. Waiting can often be challenging for artists (and all of us), but it also provides an opportunity for reflection and anticipation.

Finally, seeing the song released and receiving positive feedback from listeners has been incredibly rewarding for Joseph. “It’s cool that just people now are like getting to hear it.” The joy and energy that he poured into the song are now being shared with a wider audience, fulfilling his desire to spread the joy of Jesus through music.

As you listen to “Down in My Heart,” allow yourself to be transported back to simpler times, while also embracing the message of hope and growth that the song so beautifully conveys.
