A Wake-up Call to the Comfortable
Complacency can sometimes be the biggest danger to our faith. In His letter to the church in Laodicea, Jesus calls out their spiritual lukewarmness to encourage them to wake up to the truth of their need for real, lasting fellowship with Him.
I correct and discipline everyone I love. Take this seriously, and change the way you think and act.
– Revelation 3:19 GW
The church in Laodicea had a reputation for being wealthy, self-sufficient, and spiritually fine. But Jesus saw the truth. And He loved them too much to let them keep living in the illusion.
“You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:17 NLT).
That sounds harsh, but Jesus doesn’t turn away from them. He knocks. He invites. He offers fellowship. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in…” (Revelation 3:20 NASB).
Let your wake-up call from Jesus remind you that in His deep love, He’ll never give up on you.
The Laodiceans were comfortable, settled, and spiritually asleep. And that’s exactly why Jesus speaks with such urgency, because comfort can lull us away from Him quietly, slowly—and dangerously.
Still, the call to “be zealous and repent” is a gracious invitation to return to the One who truly satisfies.
If you’ve been drifting—spiritually dulled, emotionally distant, or coasting through your faith—don’t wait for a crisis to wake you up. Jesus is knocking now—gently, but persistently. Closeness with Him is worth waking up for.
