Abigail’s Peacemaking Gift

The Christmas season is beautiful, but it can also be overwhelming—emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. In the flurry of expectations and strained family dynamics, it’s easy to let stress override grace. But Scripture gives us a remarkable example of kindness and wisdom in the story of Abigail.

He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
– Colossians 1:17 NKJV

In 1 Samuel 25, Abigail’s husband, Nabal, insults David, a future king already on edge. David is ready to strike back in anger—until Abigail steps in. She doesn’t just offer words; she brings food, humility, and peacemaking. Her kind and courageous act not only spares her household but softens the heart of a man who was moments away from vengeance.

Let kindness be a powerful, peace-making force in you that turns conflict into calm.

Abigail could have stayed silent. She could have feared the cost. But instead, she stepped into a tense situation with discernment and grace. Her kindness was active, thoughtful, and bold. She used what she had to change the outcome—for her family, for David, and ultimately, for God’s greater story.

Like Abigail, we’re invited to meet people on the road with gifts of peace—through a kind word, a thoughtful act, or a patient response. In a world quick to react, we can reflect the heart of Jesus by choosing compassion.

This season, where might God be asking you to show that kind of courageous kindness? Is there a conversation you’ve been avoiding? A person who needs your grace more than your opinion? A way to extend peace where there’s tension?

Today’s One Thing
Identify one stressful relationship or tense situation in your life. Ask God for wisdom and the courage to respond with kindness. Then, do one tangible thing—big or small—to bring peace into that space this week.
