Choose the Better Portion
It’s amazing how many different directions you can be pulled before your feet hit the floor. And yet, when the noise quiets and your heart whispers, “There must be more,” that’s the Holy Spirit calling you back to what matters most. You’re not made to live under busyness, but to have a better portion.
But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
– Luke 10:41-42 ESV
Was Martha’s rushing around wrong? No, BUT—she was consumed by details and distracted by her sense of duty. Jesus didn’t scold Martha for working, but He pointed out that distractions pulled her away from what mattered most.
How does this scene play out in your own life? When you focus more on listing and accomplishing tasks than on spending time with Jesus, your soul becomes thirsty.
God never meant for you to serve Him while ignoring Him. When your calendar is full, but your heart feels distant, you’re living like Martha while your soul is hungry like Mary’s. What if you paused more often to ask, “Is this feeding my spirit or just feeding my schedule?” That question can reshape your days.
Let God fill your soul before you fill your task list.
Jesus said Mary had chosen the good portion, and it wouldn’t be taken from her. That kind of clarity comes when you draw close to Him by lingering with Him in scripture. When you shut off the noise and prioritize Him, when you ask God to handle your day, you’ll receive direction and peace. You already have His full attention and affection, regardless of your list of to-dos, and He wants you to have the good portion.
Pause, and with a deep breath, choose the good portion. When faced with the option to be busy or to be present with God, choose His presence. When your phone pulls you one way, and the Word calls you another, choose the truth. When performance threatens to define your worth, rest in who you are in Christ and receive His assurance.
Today’s One Thing
Thank God for always being present, and affirm, “I choose the good portion today. I will sit at Jesus’ feet, listen to His Word, and place His presence as priority.”
