Chosen for This
Loving your country well is harder when the climates feel uncertain. Psalm 33:12 gives us both something to stand on and something to do.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he has chosen as his own.
— Psalm 33:12 NKJV
Independence Day brings flags and fireworks and a moment to pause and be grateful for the country you call home. But gratitude and love for your country run deeper than one day a year. Psalm 33:12 points to why.
The verse holds two distinct truths.
The first is national: a nation whose God is the Lord is a blessed nation.
The second is personal: God has chosen a people as His own.
The blessing of a nation comes through the faithfulness of the people God has placed within it. More than a citizen of this country. You are chosen—placed here, in this moment, in this cultural climate—on purpose.
And that changes what it means to love your country.
God placed you in this country on purpose. Your love for your nation finds its fullest expression in prayer and intentional presence.
When Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem’s walls were broken down, he sat down and wept. Then he prayed. Then he got to work. His love for his city moved through grief into intercession and then action—and the wall was rebuilt.
A believer’s love for country starts with specific, honest, consistent prayer for leaders, for communities, and for the people around you. It moves into presence by showing up in your neighborhood, your church, and your city as someone who brings the peace and character of God into every room.
God blesses nations through you, praying faithfully, living intentionally, loving the people in front of you well.
This Fourth of July, let your love for your country take on a new shape in gratitude for what this nation has been and with a new commitment to what God has called you to within it. You are chosen for this moment. Pray like it. Live like it. Show up like it.
Today’s One Thing
Pray specifically for your country today—for your leaders, your community, and the people around you who are struggling. Ask God to show you one practical way to invest in the people He has placed in your path this week.
