Crush Comparison

In John 21:21, after Jesus shared some information about Peter’s future, Peter’s curiosity about another disciple’s fate prompted him to ask Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?”

When they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

– 2 Corinthians 10:12 ESV

It’s a relatable moment, isn’t it? How often do you catch yourself comparing your journey to those of others? The temptation to measure your successes, failures, or even God’s plans for you against someone else’s can be all too real.

But Jesus’s response to Peter is powerful: “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” (John 21:22, ESV). In this simple reply, Jesus redirects Peter’s focus back to his own path and relationship with Him.

Walk your path victoriously, free from the distraction of comparison.

This is a great reminder not to get caught up in comparing spiritual walks, gifts, or blessings with those of others. Instead, prioritize faithfully following Christ, trusting in His unique plan for your life.

When the urge to compare arises, you can pause and reflect on Jesus’s words to Peter. You can remind yourself that God’s plans for each person are tailor-made, and comparison only detracts from your own journey. Rather than fixating on what others have or haven’t been given, you can seek to deepen your own connection with Christ and fulfill the purpose He has for you.

Take Jesus’s advice to heart: “You follow me!” In doing so, you’ll find fulfillment and purpose in walking the path He has set before you, free from the distractions of comparison.

Today’s One Thing

A prayer you can pray: “Heavenly Father, remind me to keep my focus on You and Your plan for me each day, not someone else’s life and situation. In You, I will choose contentment and joy with what You’ve put before me. Amen.”
