Fishin’ Provision

When your net is empty, you can trust Jesus to fill it with all you need and more.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

– Philippians 4:19 ESV

After Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to His disciples several times. The third time was on the Sea of Galilee, after they had gone out to fish but caught nothing. In the morning, they heard a man call out to them from the shore, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

They replied, “No,” not recognizing Jesus.

Picture a group of weary fishermen, casting their nets with hope, only to reel them back in empty. Their efforts were useless.

When your efforts seem futile, God has a plan to provide abundantly for you.

Jesus told them to throw their net on the right side of the boat and they’d catch some fish. They did as He said, and suddenly their net was overfilled with large fish.

As soon as they brought in the net, John knew it was the Lord at work. Maybe he recalled three years earlier when they’d first followed Jesus when He’d performed a similar miracle. (See Luke 5:1-11.) On their own, their net was empty, but with Him it was overflowing.

As Jesus sat on the shore cooking fish over a fire, He invited them to come and have breakfast with Him. He offered them bread, fish, and time together. He provided the sustenance and encouragement they needed.

When faced with disappointment and exhaustion, trust in Jesus’ provision. Even when your efforts seem futile, He has a plan to provide abundantly for you.

Today’s One Thing

A prayer you can pray: “Father, my net is empty. Please fill it with Your presence and provision. I humble myself before You in need of Your guidance. Show me what You would have me do. Amen”
