Get in Sync with Wisdom

No one likes to be corrected. Whether it comes from a friend, a mentor, or the quiet conviction of the Holy Spirit, it can feel uncomfortable—even painful. Yet Proverbs 17:10 tells us that how we respond to correction says a lot about our character.

A single rebuke does more for a person of understanding than a hundred lashes on the back of a fool.
– Proverbs 17:10 NLT

Correction can sting, but when we receive it with humility, it becomes a doorway to growth. Proverbs 17:10 teaches us that wisdom isn’t about knowing everything—it’s about being teachable.

A wise heart listens for correction because they desire to grow.

A person of understanding welcomes correction because they know that God often uses it to shape us, strengthen us, and bring us closer to His heart. The truth, spoken in love, helps us keep our lives in sync with His wisdom and ways.

But a fool, Proverbs says, won’t listen. Even after many consequences, their heart remains hard. They may react defensively, make excuses, or avoid accountability. And in doing so, they miss the opportunity to grow.

On the other hand, a single word of guidance can redirect the wise. That’s the heart God invites us to have—one that listens with humility, learns with grace, and leans into growth even when it’s hard.

Correction, when received rightly, is a gift. It means someone cares enough to speak truth. And it means God is lovingly working in us, refining our character to look more like Christ.

Today’s One Thing
Reflect on a time when you received correction. How did you respond? Ask God to give you a teachable spirit and the wisdom to receive feedback with grace. If needed, seek out a trusted voice for guidance in an area you’re growing.
