God’s Persistent Love

When we think of sin, we often picture obvious rebellion. But Jonah’s disobedience was the quiet, internal refusal to accept what God had asked of him. We can relate—especially when it’s hard or doesn’t align with our expectations.

“I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, and He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.”
—Jonah 2:2 NKJV

Jonah knew God. He even heard God’s voice. But when truth collided with his preferences, Jonah ran. As a prophet in his day, he heard God clearly tell him to go to Nineveh—a brutal enemy of Israel—and deliver a message of judgment. But instead of obeying, Jonah bought a ticket in the opposite direction.

Why? Because deep down, Jonah didn’t want to see his enemies forgiven. In Jonah 4:2, we find out the real reason he ran: “So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm” (NKJV).

This is where spiritual sleep begins—not always with outright rebellion, but with subtle resistance to God’s heart.

Even in the deepest waters, God’s mercy is there to help you make your way back to Truth.

So God pursued Jonah—not to punish him, but to awaken His soul. A storm came. Jonah was thrown overboard. And in the belly of a fish, he cried out. His prayer in Jonah 2 is desperate and honest. And God heard him.

That’s the kind of God we serve! He sends truth to chase us down with correction and mercy. He uses life’s storms and whales to bring us back to life.

Even after Jonah obeyed and delivered God’s message, he still had things to learn. We can run from truth, but we can’t outrun God’s persistent love. Through our journey of facing what we’d rather avoid, we must allow God to soften our hearts again and again.

Today’s One Thing
Ask God: “Lord, is there any place in my life where I’m running from your truth?”
Write down one area where you’ve been resistant—then surrender it in prayer, trusting that He’ll meet you not with shame, but with grace.
