Growing in Christ, Intentionally
Spiritual maturity takes intentionality. In 2 Peter 1, we’re shown a clear path that draws us closer to Jesus and shapes His character within us. When we add these qualities to our faith, we grow in Christ with purpose and direction.
For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
– 2 Peter 1:8 NIV
Since God has already given us everything we need, let’s respond to Him by becoming fully diligent to grow in Christlike character, allowing Him to transform us daily.
Each quality in this list builds on the one before it. Faith is our foundation, but Peter shows us that faith grows best when it’s nourished—first with moral excellence, then knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, affection, and finally, love.
Faith begins your journey, but love completes it—and Christ forms both as you grow in Him.
Sometimes we treat spiritual growth like something that should just happen. But Peter reminds us to “make every effort” with purpose. These qualities don’t grow overnight. They take time, and they often stretch us.
Self-control might grow in the middle of stress.
Endurance might deepen through waiting.
Love might expand as you walk with someone who is difficult to love.
But through it all, Christ is doing a deep and beautiful work in you. He’s not just shaping what you do—He’s forming who you are.
When you lean into this growth process with Jesus, you begin to reflect His heart more clearly. And the promise? This kind of life doesn’t stay stagnant. It multiplies impact, deepens intimacy with Him, and leads to a faith that’s vibrant and alive.
Jesus invites you into a life of growth—intentional, steady, Spirit-led. These qualities aren’t out of reach. By His Spirit, they’re already forming in you as you follow Him. Keep saying yes. Keep growing. He’s making you more like Himself.
Today’s One Thing
Choose one of the qualities from 2 Peter 1:5–7 that stands out to you today. Reflect on how Jesus has been growing it in your life. Write down one way you can partner with Him this week to cultivate it further.
