Listening While Praying
Have you ever approached prayer like a to-do list — let’s get it done? But prayer isn’t just about speaking; it’s about listening, too. God longs to talk to you, to guide your heart and settle your spirit, but you need to slow down and quiet your soul to hear Him. When you pause and truly listen, you open yourself to His voice, rich with wisdom, guidance, comfort, and peace.
For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity.
– Proverbs 2:6-7 ESV
Being quiet and listening while in prayer may feel unnatural at first. You might struggle with wandering thoughts or feel the pull of distractions—social media, your to-do list, successes, or failures. Instead of trying to empty your mind, turn your focus toward God. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Stillness allows you to recognize His presence, power, and wisdom. When you lean into His voice, you begin to understand the peace He offers—a peace that surpasses your circumstances.
God speaks to those who come near to Him and listen.
So, how do you improve your listening in prayer?
Start by creating space, physically and spiritually. Find a quiet place, set aside your agenda, and open your Bible.
Let His Word shape your thoughts.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you discern God’s voice, then sit silently.
Resist the urge to fill the quiet with your own words.
Trust that God is present, even in the stillness.
Listening isn’t always about receiving immediate answers. Sometimes, it’s simply resting in God’s presence, knowing He is near. As you practice His presence, you’ll notice a sense of His guidance in your life. His voice may come through Scripture, a nudge in your spirit, or someone else’s wisdom. No matter how He speaks, His voice and presence always bring clarity and peace.
Today’s One Thing
Ask the Lord to quiet your mind and help you discern His voice. Say aloud, “I choose to listen to God in prayer, trusting His voice to guide, comfort, and bring peace to my heart.”
