Loved at the Starting Line

By Z. Taylor Anderson

A lot of us assume God loves us more when we do more. But in God’s family, love is the starting line—not the finish line. Before Jesus preached a sermon, healed a sick person, or carried the cross, the Father spoke love over Him—out loud, in public, on purpose.

And behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
– Matthew 3:17 ESV

Matthew 3 is such a quiet, powerful moment. Jesus is baptized, and before His public ministry begins, the Father interrupts the scene with a sentence that settles everything: “Beloved… well pleased.” No résumé. No achievements. Just relationship.

That’s not only a beautiful detail about Jesus—it’s a pattern for us.

If you’re a new believer (or you’re still learning what it means to be one), you might feel pressure to “prove” your faith. To get your life cleaned up fast. To know the Bible well enough. To serve, volunteer, share, lead—anything that makes you feel useful to God.

But God doesn’t build His relationship with you on usefulness. He builds it on love.

God reminds you who you are before He asks you to do anything.

The Father’s love is the foundation you stand on while you grow. And the Father still reminds you who you are: His daughter, forgiven, chosen, and deeply loved. From that place, assignments become overflow—not striving. You don’t obey to earn love; you obey because you already have love.

So when you share Christ, you’re not trying to perform for God or win His approval. You’re simply inviting someone else to meet the God who loved you first.

Let love be your starting place today. Sit in it. Receive it. Then take your next step from secure ground—beloved, not burdened.

Today’s One Thing
Write this sentence somewhere you’ll see it: “I am loved by the Father before I am used by Him.” Read it aloud before you start your day.
