Prepared for Battle
So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light…. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ.
─ Romans 13:12, 14
We’ve all arrived at an event to find we were either overdressed or under-dressed for the occasion. When we are invited to an event, one of the first things we want to know is how we should dress. If it’s a formal dinner, a pool party, a hike in the mountains or a job interview, we want to dress for the occasion.
Adam, the first man made in God’s image was clothed in the glory of God. He shone from the inside out with the presence of God. When he chose to disobey God, his sin resulted in spiritual death, which separated him from God. In that instant, God’s glory, or the light, went out of him, and he became aware of his nakedness. He hid from God because he was ashamed.
We are instructed, as believers, to put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:11). His armor protects us in the spiritual battle we wage against our enemy, the devil. As followers of Christ, we’ve chosen God’s side.
God would not have us unprepared for battle. He’s given us the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, foot gear, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit (Ephesians 6:14-18). We are promised victory as we depend on God’s strength that comes through the Holy Spirit. He expects us to use every part of the armor He’s provided.
