Serving Where You’re Planted

Have you ever wondered why you’re living in your neighborhood, town, or city? God placed you in this particular spot, not by accident, but so that you can help bring His goodness a little closer to the people around you.

But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
– Jeremiah 29:7 ESV

God has purposefully placed you. You’re meant to seek the welfare of your community because when it thrives, you share in that blessing too. Your street, your grocery store, your coffee shop, your city hall—these are all places where God can shine through your hands and heart.

Maybe you’ve wondered, “What can I do to make a difference here? Well, you could help stock shelves at a local pantry, rake your neighbor’s leaves or mow their grass, or mentor a kid who needs some extra encouragement. You might offer encouraging smiles to everyone you see at the store or check on an older person who doesn’t have family nearby. These are holy moments in God’s eyes, where His love breaks through.

Small acts of kindness become seeds of love and hope God plants through you.

When you serve right where you’re planted, you help change the climate of your town. You do that through the Spirit’s leading and love. When you care for people in your community, you become a living testimony that God’s love is real and active. The Holy Spirit moves through your kindness, and suddenly hearts soften, hope rises, and connections form. You may never see the full ripple effect of your efforts, but God sees every act done in love.

God loves to work through your everyday life. Opportunities can occur in the aisles of a hardware store or during a casual chat with your coworker. When you look around and ask, “Lord, how can I serve here?” He’s faithful to show you chances to love others right where you are.

Today’s One Thing
Ask the Holy Spirit to give you fresh eyes for your town, and affirm, “I believe God has planted me here on purpose, and I will look for ways to serve my community with His love and compassion.
