Thankful Before You See It
Gratitude helps you notice what God has already provided and consider what He can do with it.
Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.
– John 6:11 NLT
A large crowd followed Jesus, and the disciples immediately recognized the concern—a lot of people and barely any food to feed them. Philip calculated what it would cost to feed the thousands of people in attendance. Andrew found a boy carrying five barley loaves and two fish; the available resources seemed insignificant compared with the enormous need.
Jesus saw the same crowd and the identical amount of available food from a different perspective. We learn in John 6:11 that He took the food, gave thanks to God, and then distributed the fish and loaves of bread. Jesus gave thanks and expressed gratitude before everyone had eaten and before the disciples saw how the Father would provide.
Your gratitude declares trust in God before you see how He will provide.
You can easily become so focused on what seems missing that you overlook what God has already placed in your hands. Maybe your budget feels tight, a relationship feels strained, your energy feels limited, or an opportunity seems smaller than you hoped. Ask yourself, “What has the Father already provided, and what can He do with it?” That question redirects your attention from the size of the need to the faithfulness of the One who holds your future.
As you give thanks, watch for the ways He is already at work with what you have. His goodness reaches far beyond what you can presently see.
Today’s One Thing
Identify one thing God has already provided for a situation that concerns you. Thank Him for it and affirm, “I will gratefully recognize what God has provided and trust Him with what comes next.”
