The Strength to Forgive

Do you ever shy away from the topic of forgiveness or shelve it in the back corner of your mind? Forgiveness is a necessity for living a life of freedom.

Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

  Luke 23:34 KJV

Consider forgiveness as a fine piece of art. Every stroke painted by the Spirit on your heart’s canvas transforms wounds into wonders and bitterness into beauty. You might question, “But how can I forgive when the hurt is so painful?”

Forgiveness does not diminish the wrong done against you or deny your pain. Instead, it disarms the power that pain has over you, setting you free from the chains of bitterness. Does it take strength to forgive – absolutely.

Look to Jesus for strength to forgive others and live free.

Jesus, hanging on the cross, extended forgiveness to those who betrayed Him, providing us with the ultimate example of forgiveness.

When forgiveness seems beyond your grasp, look to Jesus. His power in the face of ultimate betrayal, pain, and hurt will give you the strength to forgive. Since the Son of God forgave during the midst of agony, you can also forgive with the strength of the Holy Spirit and reliance upon Christ.

Forgiving might feel like giving a gift to the one who hurt you, but in essence, it’s your heavenly Father’s gift to you. You release yourself from a spiritual prison. The key to breaking free and the strength to use it comes from a deep well of grace supplied by the Holy Spirit.

Today’s One Thing

As you pray and ask for God’s help to step into the freedom of forgiveness, affirm aloud to yourself today: “By the strength I receive from the Holy Spirit, I choose to forgive, to release, and to love, reflecting the grace abundantly given to me.”
