When God Turns Mourning into Expectation
You have known seasons when tears felt more natural than laughter. You wake up hoping for strength just to make it through the day. You’re not doubting God, but you long for relief. In that tension, Jesus meets you with new life and turns your sorrow into anticipation with a single word—your name.
“Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” “Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher).
– John 20:15-16 NLT
Tears narrow your world. You focus on what was, what should have been, what feels permanently lost. Your prayers grow quiet because you’re numb, and your expectations shrink into survival mode. Mary Magdalene stood in that same place outside the tomb where they had laid Jesus. For a moment, grief eclipsed her hope.
As you read the verses, you see Jesus invite her to speak her sorrow. Then everything shifted when He said her name. That one word changed the atmosphere of her heart. In an instant, mourning turned into hopeful expectation.
You have felt the weight of loss—dreams that dissolved, people you miss, seasons that ended too soon. In those moments, Jesus, who conquered death, still stands close by. He sees your tears. The Holy Spirit gently opens your eyes to recognize His presence.
When Jesus calls your name, grief gives way to hope.
Your sorrow never surprises God. The Father holds your story in His sovereign care. When you give your grief to Jesus, He will call your name. He restores your identity before your circumstances. He reminds you that you belong to Him. His assurance creates expectation and awakens hope.
You may walk through seasons of mourning, yet you never walk alone. The One who defeated the grave knows your name and calls you forward. Let His voice turn your sorrow into anticipation of what He will do next.
Today’s One Thing
