The Mary Question – Synopsis

Because of Eve’s disobedience to God, and Adam’s cooperation with her, they lost sanctifying grace for themselves and their offspring (The Fall of Man). Like Eve, Mary was created full of grace. But unlike Eve, Mary remained obedient to God, just as Christ, unlike Adam, remained obedient to God.
Jesus, through His obedience, and Mary through hers, reversed the effects of Adam and Eve’s rebellion, fulfilling God’s plan for the redemption of mankind from the Fall.
The Catholic Church gives high honor to St. Mary (in Greek called hyperdulia) for her part in salvation history. However, devotion to Mary is perhaps often limited to that honor for those Protestants who view Mary primarily as biological mother to Jesus.
St. Paul and others note that God arranged salvation history in such a perfect way that all reality would be in harmony with His divine plan. Thus, Mary participated in our Redemption by accepting Archangel Gabriel’s news that she was chosen to be mother of Jesus.
In cooperation with God, Mary became Mother of the Redeemer, and in cooperation with Christ, she became Mother of the redeemed. Through her complete obedience to God, she collaborated in achieving salvation for those that follow her Son, reversing the effects of Eve’s disobedience that brought mortality to mankind.
