On Saturday, October 26th, at 7:00 PM, the Owosso Performing Arts Center will welcome renowned professional angler and motivational speaker, Clay Dyer, for an inspirational evening of storytelling and encouragement. Known for his motto, “If I can, you can,” Clay will share his unique and powerful journey of becoming a professional champion on the fishing circuit, despite living with significant physical disabilities.
Born without legs, a left arm, and with only a partial right arm, Clay Dyer has spent his life overcoming obstacles that might seem insurmountable to others. However, from an early age, his parents taught him to focus on what he could do, rather than what he couldn’t. This mindset of resilience, determination, and faith has made Clay one of the most respected figures in both the fishing world and the realm of motivational speaking.
The event has been organized by The Rudder, a recently formed non-denominational group of mid-Michigan men dedicated to support and encourage men to live in a manner as God has called them. The group also assists area churches with events and outreaches aimed at building strong men’s ministries in local congregations. Clay’s message of perseverance resonated deeply with the members of The Rudder, who saw him as the perfect speaker to kick off their inaugural event.
Everett Smith, former teacher at Ovid Elsie High School and President of The Rudder, expressed his excitement about the event. “Getting to know Clay these past few months has been such a privilege. He’s as real as it gets. So many of us take things for granted, but Clay’s example reminds us what it truly means to face each day with courage and faith. We believe his story will encourage so many men and families in our community.”
Clay began fishing at the age of five and started competing in tournaments by age 15. Despite his physical limitations, Clay’s competitive spirit and skill led him to a successful career in professional fishing, with notable appearances on ESPN, CNN Headline News, and CBS, and features in USA Today, Newsweek, and Bassmaster. Today, he competes in the Bassmaster Open Series and participates in various charity events while remaining passionately committed to helping special needs children.
For over 25 years, Clay has been sharing his life experiences through motivational presentations across the country. His story continues to inspire thousands as he demonstrates that no challenge is too great to overcome with determination, faith, and a positive mindset.
Donations will be accepted to support The Rudder’s ongoing mission to promote personal growth and faith-based leadership in local communities.
