Hunkapi needs support to help sustain and expand this work and continue providing the community with life-changing services. As the most significant fundraiser of the year\, the Open Your Heart Gala raises a significant portion of the annual operating budget and allows the team to continue empowering\, inspiring\, and changing lives through our therapeutic equine programs. \nDuring the event\, emceed by 5-time Emmy Award winning news anchor\, Brandon Lee\, guests will enjoy a live auction hosted by Auctioneer\, Subyn Novelle\, featuring items from local Arizona businesses plus engaging speeches by program participants and the program’s executive director\, Terra Schaad. The festivities will continue with a delicious farm-to-table dinner\, mechanical bull\, best dressed “Old Wild West” contest\, cowboy games\, photo opportunities with members of the herd and more. In the spirit of the evening\, we will be raising money for the sustainability and continuation of Hunkapi Programs. Bonnie and Michael Quinn started the organization 3 years ago to honor these 4 Hero Groups mainly because when their son PJ died of cancer as a young man 3 years ago\, the First Responders were so helpful and kind to the family when their son needed ongoing medical care and transportation.\nThe event is a fun filled concert featuring Leonid & Friends\, a famous cover band for the band Chicago. The event is free and the proceeds will be donated to the 4 Hero Groups listed above.\nFYI: Rockin’ 4 Heroes is an all-volunteer free tribute concert to honor our First Responders\, Active Military\, Veterans and Gold Star families. Join us on Sunday October 15\, 2023 at 2:00 pm (gates open at 1:00 pm) in Oro Valley at James D. Kriegh Park\, the event will run about 3.5 hours.\nHighlights of this year’s event:\nOur nation’s colors will be presented by an all-female group of combat veterans\, from Women’s Warriors\nWe have been approved by the FAA for a 4-jet flyover\, DMAFB Colonel Mills has confirmed a 2-jet flyover. (still working to get 4 ????)\nRetired Major General Ted Maxwell will join Retired Vice-Admiral Dr. Richard Carmona in our Opening Ceremony to officially honor two World War II Veterans in attendance.\nA ten-piece string section\, compromised of past and present Tucson Symphony musicians\, will join Leonid & Friends (the band) for the second half\nWe ask everyone to bring a folding chair to sit and invite as many folks as you like (no coolers or pets allowed) \nAll net proceeds benefit organizations that serve our hero groups. This year’s beneficiaries include Dogs 4 Vets\, which serves disabled veterans to acquire and train their own Service dogs. Strength & Shield\, a Police Chaplaincy program was founded to assist Arizona law enforcement agencies to create their own Chaplain programs.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 14th\, 2023\, thousands of people will hit the streets and hundreds of cities across the globe to walk in a single file line\, holding posters and handing out fliers- to reach their city with information about human trafficking and how to end it. \nOur group\, Warriors for Freedom\, is partnering with A21 campaign\, which is a global organization that educates and equips everyone to understand identify\, and reduce the risk of human trafficking through programs like educational curriculum\, prevention programs\, and awareness campaigns. \nCheck-in starts at 9 am with the walk to follow. Participants will park in the free parking garage on Chandler Boulevard and Arizona Avenue. It’s located behind\, The Look\, dine-in theater. The group will then meet in the park alongside Arizona Avenue\, off San Marco’s Place\, just to the South of the parking garage. We will walk South on Arizona Avenue to Pecos Road\, then cross to the East Side and walk North to Chandler Boulevard. All participants should come wearing a black T-shirt or purchase one on the a21 website (www.A21.org/walk).

DESCRIPTION:Air Force pilot Bob Jeffrey\, who spent more than seven years as a POW at the “Hanoi Hilton\,” will be the guest speaker at the Oct. 14 Veterans Breakfast sponsored by La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church\, Scottsdale. \nThe free breakfast\, sponsored by the church’s Veterans Ministry\, begins at 8 a.m. at the church\, 6300 E. Bell Road. Jeffrey will speak at 9 a.m. The public is invited. \nJeffrey was born in California and joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 21. He was based in the Philippines\, flying combat support missions in Vietnam. On a flight to Vietnam his plane was hit and disintegrated in a fireball at low altitude. He ejected and was captured. \nAfter his return to the United States he graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University then was assigned to Williams Air Force Base.
