Faith at the Family Table

Nurturing Belief through Daily Rituals

Daily life is filled with moments that, while seemingly mundane, hold the potential for profound spiritual growth and connection. Danny Gokey talked with us about his practice of communion with his family, and how simple daily rituals can strengthen faith and family bonds, creating a legacy of belief that resonates through generations.

“I love to  do communion with my kids and my wife. We get these little communion cups with the wafers already in it, and they just love it,” Danny shared. “I know they don’t really understand it, but it’s just that they get excited to do it because they get a little grape juice and a little water for that, and they get to open up this little thing. I love this age…and I think they’re going to get it.”

By sharing communion with his family, Danny exemplifies how shared spiritual experiences spark conversations about faith for every generation. Communion teaches about Jesus’ sacrifice and opens doors to understanding one another’s thoughts and feelings about faith, life, and God.

Teaching Moments with Children

“They’re at the age where they ask about a question, especially one of my sons.” Danny said, “He’s just so curious, constantly….I enjoy this questioning season because he has the most random questions, and I can’t think of one off my head…We started keeping notes of what he says. One of these days we have to revisit these things because what he asks is hilarious.”

Children’s questions about God and life can be surprising and offer fresh perspectives on familiar truths. Danny’s interactions with his children during communion are filled with teachable moments, where even simple queries can lead to deep discussions. Engaging with their curiosity encourages a vibrant, questioning faith that grows and evolves with them.

The Joy of Rituals

Establishing and maintaining family rituals such as nightly prayers, scripture readings, or meals can transform ordinary time into special moments. These practices become rhythms of faith, embedding deep spiritual truths into the fabric of everyday life and providing a framework that guides children as they grow.

“When my wife was pregnant with Gabriel, she always said, ‘This is the funny one.’ She just always said that in the womb. She said, ‘He’s going to be fine.’ She was typically that way with all her kids. She would work with the Lord on naming them and all the different things. But each one had a unique bent that she could tell in her womb.”

Legacy of Faith

The spiritual routines you practice today lay the foundation for your children’s faith tomorrow. Danny’s commitment to spiritual practices within his family serves as an inspiring example of how you can cultivate a robust and enduring faith in your family, one that children can carry into adulthood and pass on to their families.
