Feeling Far From God?
How to Know When Your Soul Needs Renewal
You can love God with your whole heart and still find yourself in a season where He feels distant. You still believe. You still pray. You still show up. But somewhere inside, a quiet ache forms—something you don’t always know how to name.
- Maybe your prayers feel like they’re falling to the floor.
- Worship might feel harder to enter than it used to be.
- Perhaps you’re carrying burdens that once felt lighter, but now sit heavily on your soul.
- Or maybe you simply miss the closeness you used to feel—even if nothing “big” has changed.
Scripture speaks of moments just like these, calling them a kind of spiritual sleep—when the heart grows tired and the inner flame dims. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “For the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, ‘Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14 NLT).
Paul’s words are a gentle reminder that God sees your weariness, understands your longing, and knows exactly where to meet you. Feeling far from God doesn’t mean you’ve failed, but instead, your soul is ready for renewal.

What Does It Mean to Be Spiritually Asleep?
Spiritual sleep may feel like weariness. It’s the slow dimming of the inner senses that once made God feel so close. It often arrives quietly—through busy seasons, heavy responsibilities, or long stretches of emotional or spiritual strain.
Spiritual sleep simply means your heart needs renewal. And God specializes in renewal.
Scripture shows this again and again. David cried out, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” (Psalm 13:1 NIV). David acknowledged something perhaps missing that had once been there.
Elijah felt it too. The same prophet who once called down fire from heaven reached a point where he sat under a broom tree and whispered, “I have had enough, Lord” (1 Kings 19:4 NIV). He wasn’t faithless—he was simply worn out. Something in his spirit had faded, and God met him gently with rest, nourishment, and a whisper that revived him.
Asaph described a similar ache in Psalm 73. “But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold” (Psalm 73:2 NIV). He wasn’t running from God; he was struggling to make sense of what he believed and what he saw in the world around him. That tension pulled him into a spiritual fog—until he stepped back into God’s presence and found clarity again.

Each of these moments opens our eyes to a deeper truth: spiritual sleep never has the final word. God is always inviting us back into His light—back into renewal, clarity, and the steady warmth of His presence.
3 Signs Your Heart May Be Quieting Into Spiritual Sleep
1. Worship stirs the room, but your heart feels still.
You want to engage, but something inside stays tucked away. Jesus spoke of moments like this—when the heart grows dull (Matthew 13:15 NIV), not from disinterest but from fatigue.
2. Scripture feels harder to absorb.
You read the words, yet your heart feels slow to awaken. Paul understood this too, urging believers to “wake up from your slumber” (Romans 13:11 NIV)—not because they failed, but because God had more life for them to receive.
3. Your soul feels tired even when life looks fine.
It’s the inner weariness David described: “My soul thirsts for God” (Psalm 42:2 NIV). And thirst is often the first sign that God is already drawing you closer.
