“God, Do You Even Care?”
Brandon Lake on Trusting God in Difficult Times
Trusting God is easy when life is going smoothly, but what about when the road gets rough? Worship leader Brandon Lake knows firsthand that faith can be tested in ways that feel overwhelming. Brandon talked with us about his personal struggles and how he has learned to trust God even during the most difficult seasons.
No stranger to the challenges of waiting on God, Brandon faced one of the toughest seasons in his life. “We were trying for our first child for eight months,” Brandon shared, describing the heartache and uncertainty they felt. “And I don’t want to act like that’s the toughest story because there’s people who have been trying for years and years, and I had faith that we would eventually have a child because my mom had six miscarriages.”
During this time, Brandon admitted that doubt began to creep in. “It’s not that I didn’t believe, but you start to have some doubts and wonder, ‘Why isn’t this happening? God, do you even care?’” It’s a feeling many of us can relate to—waiting for a breakthrough while questioning whether God is listening.
But even in this painful season, Brandon found strength in the stories of faith from his family. “[My mom] had three [miscarriages] before me and then three between my brother and my sister, who are alive today, well and amazing. I grew up with stories like that and miracles all around me,” he said, reflecting on how those stories kept him grounded in the belief that God’s timing was perfect.
Brandon also recognizes the unique challenge of walking through trials with a loved one. As much as the wait for their first child affected him, he saw how deeply it affected his wife. “It’s one thing when you’re going through something yourself, but when your spouse is really going through something and really struggling, I feel like I carry that weight even more than she probably does, and vice versa. There’s been things that I’ve encountered where my wife carried it like a burden—like more than I did. That season was pretty tough to just kind of continue to trust God,” he admitted, adding that there are moments in marriage when you carry each other’s burdens more heavily.
Faith in tough times is often more than navigating your personal challenges but also being there for those closest to you. There’s a sense of shared struggle, where you feel the weight of your partner’s pain as if it were your own. This makes it all the more important to stay connected to community and, ultimately, to God.
When the road gets tough, isolating yourself might feel like the easiest option, but Brandon emphasized, “I think what’s helpful in those seasons is community and making sure that you’re not isolating yourself.”
God often speaks through the people around us.
The support of friends and loved ones has been essential to Brandon during his most challenging moments. He recalls how, when he felt distant from God, his community stepped in to remind him of God’s promises. “I’ve had friends that were the voice of God for me,” Brandon shares. “They were the Jesus that I needed. Jesus used them to pull me out of that place.”
In seasons of doubt and waiting, it can be easy to feel like God is silent. But God often speaks through the people around us. Whether it’s through encouraging words, prayers, or simply the presence of someone who understands, community can be the very thing that helps us hold onto faith.
Even when God seems silent, He is always at work.
While waiting for answers can feel excruciating, Brandon encourages you to trust in God’s plan. Brandon reminds us that in difficult seasons, holding on to God’s promises can help us push through the doubts. When you’re not hearing God’s voice for yourself, let your community help lift you up, and always return to the truth that God is for you, even when it feels like He is far away.
