What If Obedience Is the Win?

Micah Tyler on Redefining Success
By Intentional Life Media | LIFE in Session

What if the bravest thing you could do today wasn’t achieving something big—but being faithful with something small?

For Micah Tyler, a Christian artist known for songs like “Different” and “Walking Free,” faith hasn’t always looked like crowds, platforms, or radio charts. It started with a youth group, a pizza budget, and a question: “What does faithfulness really look like?”

Micah is clear that stepping out in faith rarely feels fearless. “Whenever God calls you to step out in a radical way… there’s fear attached to it,” he says. “There’s worry attached to it… and so for me, I graduated from high school, became a youth pastor at 18 years old… did youth ministry for nine years.”

Faithfulness Can Look Unimpressive

When he picked up a guitar to lead worship for teenagers, it didn’t feel like a big leap of faith. It seemed more like just meeting a need. “I went ahead and spent a little of our pizza budget to grab [a guitar], started leading worship for them,” he says. “And I had no idea that at 27, God was going to completely change what faithfulness looked like.”

Micah’s journey led him away from comfort and toward a deeper kind of obedience. “We sold over half of what we owned,” he recalls. “We bought a single mobile home trailer. I was doing odd jobs on the side… I wasn’t driving down the road in a sausage delivery truck [thinking], This is what purpose really looks like.”

Still, he says, that season reshaped his view of calling. “At the end of the day, you’ll never stand before Jesus and Him say, ‘Well done, that good and successful musician,’ or fill in the blank for whatever your job may be. It’s, ‘Well done, that good and faithful servant.’”

Micah hints to Jesus’s words in Matthew 25:21: “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’” (NIV).

Growth Happens in the Everyday

Micah says he’s learned the most about God in the small, unremarkable moments.

“I’ve learned so much more in the daily bread faith walk of knowing Jesus than reaching the top of some of the mountains,” he says. “It’s the still small moments where I can trust God even more, and that He is building something in me.”

For Micah and his family, success often looked like just enough. “It’s those little moments where we’re able to pay a light bill ,and I know who’s going to come through,” he shares. “It was those little moments where we can see something click in the lives of our kids… We celebrate the big things, but also we just praise God for all these little small moments where He shows His kindness and His faithfulness day after day.”

When Faith Overcomes Fear

Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s choosing obedience anyway. The reward isn’t the platform or the applause. It’s hearing the voice of Jesus say, “Well done.”

So when the fear creeps in, don’t shrink back. Stay obedient and remain open because what if obedience is the win?
