Trusting God When You Feel Lost

Insights from Casey Moore of LEELAND

We have a common thread that binds all believers – the quest for closeness with God. Casey Moore, the guitarist for LEELAND, the Texas-based band known for their soul-stirring music, opened up about the paradoxes of faith—feeling both incredibly close to and, paradoxically, far from God in a conversation with Family Life Radio.

Casey Moore candidly reflects on his growing relationship with God, noting, “I am the closest I’ve ever been to Him, but also at the same time, in the same days, I feel the furthest I’ve ever felt.”

As you grow and evolve, your understanding deepens, and so do your questions. You begin to “question the questions,” delving deeper into the mysteries of faith, God’s will, and the purpose of life’s trials.

Questions Without Answers

Casey’s approach to these questions is both unique and relatable. He retreats into his studio, turning his questions and thoughts into music and voice memos. “My phone is full of these moments and these questions that I’m always asking,” Casey shares.

His constant search for answers, speaks to a vibrant faith, one that wrestles and seeks deeper intimacy with God despite the lack of clear answers.

Seeking Understanding – Cultivating Trust

Casey recounts a story about a man seeking clarity from God on a major life decision. This man’s journey led him to volunteer at Mother Teresa’s ministry, hoping to find understanding through her wisdom. Upon meeting her, he expressed his desperate need for direction, only to be met with a surprising response from her:

“You don’t need clarity. You just need more trust.”

Mother Teresa’s words, as recounted by Casey, serve as a powerful reminder that faith, at its core, isn’t about having all the answers. Rather, it’s about trusting God’s goodness and guidance, even when the way forward feels shrouded in mystery.

Practical Steps to Build Trust in God

So, how do you navigate this journey of faith, armed with questions and a yearning for understanding?

  1. Start by embracing your questions as vehicles for deeper understanding, not as roadblocks to faith.

Casey’s habit of recording his thoughts and musings is a practice you might find enriching. It’s a way to externalize your questions, give them space, and perhaps over time, you’ll see how they lead you closer to God.

     2. Reflect on the moments when you’ve seen God’s hand in your life, even in the smallest of ways.

Casey looks back at the hard times, seeing God’s providence and care: “He’s always gone before me and made a way.” Reflections can be a source of strength and trust, reinforcing your faith in God’s presence and love.

     3. Seek community with those who walk this path of faith alongside you.

Sharing your questions, doubts, and revelations with others can provide comfort, wisdom, and a sense of shared journeying that is deeply affirming.

It’s okay not to have all the answers. In fact, it’s in the not knowing that faith can take root and grow. It’s in the wrestling with questions that you find yourself drawn closer to God. Trust that He is with you, in the closeness and in the distance, in the questions and in the silence.

Your journey of faith is uniquely yours, but you are not alone. You’re part of a vast, community of believers walking the same path. A path where intimacy with God is the true north, guiding every step, every question, every moment of surrender.
