DESCRIPTION:She was valedictorian of her high school\, graduated with honors from college\, earned a medical degree and\, finally\, was promoted to a top rank in the U.S. Navy. \nRear Admiral Dr. Connie Mariano will be the speaker for the Saturday\, May 25\, breakfast sponsored by the Veterans Ministry at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church\, Scottsdale. Coffee is served at 7:30 a.m. and meal service begins at 8 a.m. Mariano will speak at 9 a.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nMariano was born in the Philippines to a Navy steward and his dentist wife. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California\, San Diego\, and her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of Medicine. She went on to have a distinguished 24-year career in the U.S. Navy.\nShe was the first to be named for these achievements: first military woman as physician to the President; first woman director of the White House Medical Unit; and first Filipino American to become a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy.\nIn 2001\, after nine years of service to U.S. Presidents Bush\, Clinton and Bush\, Mariano retired\, and lives in Scottsdale\, where she continues her work in the medical field as a practicing physician.\nFollowing Dr. Mariano’s presentation\, there will be a book signing of her memoir\, The White House Doctor: My Patients Were Presidents (available for $20 cash).\nBreakfast entertainment will be provided by The Uncalled Four Quartet.\nIn addition to breakfast\, veterans may visit the Veterans Resource Booth to speak with experts for information and helpful resources. DESCRIPTION:La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church\, Scottsdale\, will host its monthly Veterans Breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday\, Jan. 13\, at the church. \nThe speaker will be U.S. Army Aviation Master Warrant Officer Randall Breitzman\, and music will be provided by Sam Mayfield\, a member of La Casa’s music department. \nBreitzman decided he wanted a career in aviation when he was in elementary school. He attended NASA Space Camp and Space Academy. In high school he obtained a private pilot certificate. In college he finished advanced pilot and aircraft ratings and earned dual degrees in aviation operations and management. \nRandall spent his entire 25-year career in U.S. Army Aviation\, starting as a PFC and retiring as a Master Warrant Officer. He reported to his first duty station shortly before the events of 9/11 and ultimately piloted Chinook & Blackhawk helicopters\, serving in Middle East combat operations. \nAdditionally he flew humanitarian and joint training missions. The Army has taken him to six continents and more than 35 countries. Breitzman has retired from the Army and resides with his wife and two daughters in the Phoenix area. \nThe public is invited to the event. DESCRIPTION:“For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth…” \nThese familiar words from Handel’s “Messiah” will fill the sanctuary of La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church\, Scottsdale\, at 7 p.m. Friday\, Dec. 1\, when the church hosts its annual “Messiah” sing-along. \nThe public is invited to the free event\, which will feature the Grand Canyon University choir\, orchestra and soloists. Accompanying on the church’s 5\,067-pipe Fritts Organ will be Dr. Jeremy Peterman\, the church’s organist and handbell choir director. \nThose who do not have the score can download a copy free at the International Music Score Library Project\, imslp.org. \n“Messiah\,” an English-language oratorio\, was composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel\, with a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible\, and from the version of the Psalms included with the Book of Common Prayer. Bell Road. Jeffrey will speak at 9 a.m. The public is invited. \nJeffrey was born in California and joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 21. He was based in the Philippines\, flying combat support missions in Vietnam. On a flight to Vietnam his plane was hit and disintegrated in a fireball at low altitude. He ejected and was captured. \nAfter his return to the United States he graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University then was assigned to Williams Air Force Base. He joined the Navy in 1969 and served as commanding officer of VF-154 Black Knights\, VX-4 Air Test and Evaluation Squadron\, and Naval Air Station Miramar. He accumulated a total of 8\,500 flight hours in tactical aircraft including 66 types of aircraft. DESCRIPTION:Ron Tucker\, who rose to the ranks of Rear Admiral and was on the U.S. Navy staff at the Pentagon\, will speak at the Veterans Breakfast Saturday\, May 20\, at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church\, Scottsdale.\nThe breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. and Tucker will speak at 9 a.m. There is no fee for the breakfast\, but donations are accepted.\nTucker was born in Santa Monica\, Calif.\, and was commissioned through the ROTC program upon his graduation in 1963. During his Navy career he commanded the Guided Missile Destroyer USS Cochrane\, the US Naval Station in Pearl Harbor\, the USS New Jersey\, and Task Force 73 and Logistics Group 7th Fleet in Singapore. He also is a distinguished graduate of the US Naval War College.\nIn retirement\, Tucker led the project to build the Veterans Memorial at Anthem\, Ariz.
